NEFanX - November 13-15, 2009

I'm only a month and a half behind on this one, so I guess I'm getting a little quicker at con reviews and pictures. I swore I'd have it done before the end of the year though, so here it is.

And so begins another con report. This one is all about New England Fan Experience in Boston, MA.

I left home early Thursday morning, since I didn't really want to drive on my own, and had decided to take the bus instead. As anyone who follows me on twitter now knows, I was incredibly surprised and thrilled to discover that the bus had wifi! It made what was already going to be a really long trip, a bit more bearable. I met up with [livejournal.com profile] mashfanficchick in New York, so I had company for the second segment of travel. We got to the hotel a little before 6pm, and found two more of our roomates, [livejournal.com profile] aztiluna13 and [livejournal.com profile] echoingvista. After dumping our stuff in the room, we headed towards Chinatown for dinner.

On our way back from dinner, we saw Gareth and Gemma going into the hotel. Other than knowing that he was actually there already, the amusing thing about this was Gareth's pants. Black and white, shiny camo. Really shiny. Um, why?

Friday we had nothing to do until registration opened, so we went across the street for lunch, and then to wander around Boston Common for a bit. In Boston Common, we saw a group of people playing Quidditch. Yeah, random much? Complete with brooms between their legs, but no flying. Oh well. I can hope, right? We left [livejournal.com profile] aztiluna13 exploring, and the rest of us headed back to the hotel. Where [livejournal.com profile] woodencoyote built a tent in the corner of the room. And then discovered that it was bigger on the inside!

Our Tardis Tent!

Registration took eternity, but once we were done, and I'd gotten extra photo op tickets for Leonard Nimoy, Gareth David-Lloyd, John de Lancie, and Corin Nemec (thanks Denise!), we spent the rest of the day just kinda hanging out. There were some chairs and a table in the corner of the lobby that our group took over, and that's where we were for most of the day.

Saturday began with Leonard Nimoy's photo op session. The line went on forever, as most of the attendees seemed to be there for him. Once it started moving though, it went relatively quickly. He was very sweet, and I'm so glad I decided to get the photo. I mean, how often will I have the chance to see him in person again? Even though I'm not into Star Trek anymore, it was one of my first fandoms, albeit one that I never got involved in the fic side of, and I have some incredibly fond memories of it. Plus, getting the photo op ticket got my access to his panel, which I really wanted to go to.

Thus started the morning of photo ops. I wanted to try to get them all done in one day, so that I didn't have to worry about looking awake on Sunday. Since I know how much sleep I usually get at conventions. So once I was done with Leonard Nimoy's line, I waited around to get back into Gareth's. That picture came out... oddly, to say the least. We both look like we're plotting something, but the more I look at it, the more its grown on me. After Gareth's picture, I got back in line yet again for John de Lancie. This time the line was significantly shorter though. At that point, I thought it was the shortest photo op line I'd ever been in. Probably about 25 or 30 of us. Since that one didn't take very long, I got right back into line for my last photo op of the day, with Corin Nemec. Who has the skinniest legs I think I've ever seen. I was sitting on the floor earlier in the day when he walked by, and I think I could have wrapped my hand around his ankle, no problem. But he's gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. And since his line consisted of 7 people, he actually took the time to talk with us as we came in for the picture. *sigh*

I killed some time in the dealers room after the photos and before Gareth's panel. Picked up a couple of small Torchwood posters, and then headed into the panel room. Since the auction was still going on, we grabbed a couple of chairs near to where our seats were supposed to be, and waited for the auction to end.

Finally, Gareth's panel started. I know that there are reports out there that includes details about the questions and answers, so I'm just going to go right to the pictures. Since no one kicked me out of the seat I was in, I had a phenomenal front row seat for the panel. Its the closest I've ever sat at a convention, and more than just being close, it meant that I got some really great pictures. I've had to limit myself as to what I could post, otherwise there would be hundreds of them.

After Gareth's panel, we killed some more time in the dealer's room, and I picked up my photos. Then we got in line for Leonard Nimoy's panel. This was one I was really looking forward to, since I've seen Gareth at cons multiple times now, and had never had the chance to see Leonard Nimoy. Our seats weren't nearly as good, but I still managed to get an aisle seat, so thatI could lean out and get decent photos. They're a bit pixelated, since I was using my digital zoom a lot, but that was the only way I could get close ups. The panel was absolutely fascinating, and I'm glad that not all the questions revolved around Star Trek. Listening to the man speak about his non-sci fi roles amazed me.

After the panels, we killed a bit of time waiting for the dinner to begin. I wasn't sure what to expect, since all my experience with guests at a dinner was from Creation cons. At those conventions, each guest went from table to table, spent about 5 minutes at each, and moved on. This one was a bit different. We went into the room, picked a table, and a guest had already chosen that table when they entered earlier. It was supposed to be a bit random, I guess. We were lucky, though, and got, shall we say, suggested to the table that Gareth was going to be at.

Dinner was a lot of fun, especially the skit at the end. My pictures of it came out like crap though. :-( After dinner, we killed some time waiting for karaoke, which I didn't actually go to for very long. We wanted to try to sing Hymns and Arias, but I ran back to the room, to try and grab the audio for it. By the time I got back, they were kicking karaoke out. But I do have the audio now, so that next time there's an opportunity, we'll be ready!

Bears, 'Dactyls, and a Monkey

Sunday started off early with breakfast. It was similar to the way that dinner had been set up, except that a few people at our table had neglected to leave an empty chair for one of the guests to sit in, so we didn't have anyone specifically with our group this time. However, rather than sitting at a particular table, Corin was making his way around the room, stopping at each table for a while. I may sound repetitive, but he's still gorgeous and sweet and utterly adorable.

After breakfast, I had nothing until Corin's panel, since I'd gotten all of my photo op pictures the day before. After wandering around a bit, and drooling at things in the dealer's room, I headed into the panel room. I got my awesome front row seat again, which was fantastic, except for one thing. About halfway through the panel, I realized how badly I needed to use the bathroom, but I couldn't just get up to leave! So I was stuck for the rest of the panel, which was brilliant. And I've officially been converted to a Corin Nemec fan. I wish I'd had the opportunity to meet him before seeing him in SG1, 'cause I think my reaction to Jonas would have been completely different. I'll have to go back and re-watch Season 6 now, just out of curiosity. He also talked about a web series that he's doing, but I can't remember what its called! So if anyone remembers, please tell me!

Corin Nemec - Sunday, November 15

I have to preface this section by saying that I had been in a bizarre mood all day, and it continued into Gareth's panel. I'd been a bit "heckly" during the auction, and it just kept going. Gareth started off by asking who'd bought the Blue Gillespie cd. Now I'm in the front row wearing my Blue Gillespie hoodie. So when Gareth commented that after the new listeners heard it, there would be an influx of emails asking what the screaming was, out of my mouth comes: "But its awesome screaming." From the front row. Gareth's response: "Says the girl in the Blue Gillespie hoodie." *pause* Then he asks me to stand up and model it. So I do. And I think my reputation as quiet is shot. I'm still not particularly outgoing, I swear, I was just in a really strange mood that day.

And then we had reached the last panel of the weekend. John de Lancie spoke a lot about boats and sailing, which isn't really my thing, but it was fascinating to watch him discuss something he is passionate about.

After the convention itself ended, we got dinner and took it back to the hotel to eat and hang out. And in what felt like the middle of the night, we watched The Waters of Mars, and I had lots of theories while I was either asleep or half-asleep that I didn't remember in the morning. :-( Humph.

In the morning, we all headed towards our respective methods of transportation home. I walked to the bus station, since it was actually a rather nice day, if a bit cold. [livejournal.com profile] mashfanficchick and I took the bus back to New York City together, grabbed lunch, and then I caught the bus the rest of the way home.

Thanks for the report and great pics!

It is good to see that Corin cut his stringy hair. He looks much cuter with shorter hair (and hair product :).

Ok so I know I gush about Corin (I Still LOVE GDL and I SO HOPE he crashes Galifrey 2010) but another favor - your pics are wonderful and I'd love to see them on corin's unofficial fansite. Could they be uploaded and credit you? Or maybe photoshopped to say by the wonderful and talented mirnell or whatever name you want to use?

Merry Happy hon! It was good to meet you at NEFANX if ever so briefly!

Great report, and nice to see the pictures again! Oh, Gareth, that is one fine profile! + stuffed animal convention! <3

I don't know Corin from jack, but those are some NICE pictures indeed.

I love the heckly bit!! And that hoodie is very awesome; band hoodies always are :)

I think the stuffed animals just multiply when we all get together! And that was without all of my guys.

Corin is just absolutely delicious, and a truly sweet person too. I don't know if it helps, but he was Jonas Quinn in Season 6 of Stargate: SG1, but not nearly as hot in that as he was here.

I'm still not sure what was up with me that day, but it was still fun!

Can I use two of your pics, pretty please?

I'm so sorry its taken me this long to get back to you. I'm sorting through the disaster that my inbox has become and found you're question.

You are welcome to use my pictures on corinnemec.com, all I ask is for credit for them. I'm glad that people have been enjoying them! I've also got some more floating around my hard drive at home, if you'd like. I'm at work now, but I can send them to you later if you're interested.

Again, my apologies for taking eternity to respond to you.
